Sad Day at the Rausch House

I wish that the blog that would have ended the drought would have contained cute pictures of first days of school and other exciting events that have taken place since we last posted. However, it really is a good thing that Chad put the cute video of Daisy on because it will be the last video of her. Sadly she died sometime Friday night. I guess while we were sleeping. Chad went upstairs Saturday morning to get her out of her cage to let the kids play with her and made the discovery. Mason was with him and Chad said she was still sleeping and that they would play with her in a little while. He took off to the pet store in hopes that he could find a match although I felt it was best to tell the kids the truth--just "one" of the unpleasant things that need to be dealt with when having a pet. Anyways, unfortunately he wasn't able to find another Daisy--only a Goldie?!? So, a really sad day for me because Goldie is a gerbil. I really never thought I would have a hamster, but a mouse. Just makes me cringe every time I think about it! The kids love her though so I guess what can you do!

A gerbil! I can picture it's little mousy claws scampering around right now. It's official. You are so going to heaven for letting your kids have one.

That's too bad about Daisy. Better luck with Goldie!

So did you have a burial for Daisy? Did your kids take it well. Does a gerbil really look like a mouse? I don't know if I've ever really seen a gerbil. I thought they were big like a bunny or something? Oh man, the thought of that. Beady little eyes and a tail. Heather, you are too kind!

Looking back on it, I think that the reason why Daisy had such a nice personality (and gray hair on her face) is because she was old. I just don't want people to think that we are pet killers or negligent.

I went ahead and bought Goldie because I didn't want to have to tell the kids Daisy was dead, and not have something to replace her with. I had Goldie in my hand when I came back to the house and when Heather met me at the front door, and I opened my hand, she flinched back in revulsion.
I knew then that it wasn't a good choice.

Goldie looks a little like a mouse - but a scruffy mouse - and she has pink eyes too...

Needless to say, Heather is a great mom.
Good post sweetie!

Okay. I just have to defend myself for a second. I did flinch back in revulsion--the huge tail did seem a bit freaky, but part of the reason was that Chad had it hidden behind his coat while shaking his head that they didn't have a hamster. So part of it was just a surprise that he really did have something. Goldie has sort of grown on me this past week, but still will never be Daisy. Apparently gerbils are better for kids and the kids do seem to like her--it did really make the whole burial ordeal a little better.
