The very most important thing we did this week was celebrate Heather's birthday. I am embarrassed to admit this, especially to the Internet, but Heather made her own birthday cake. Yup, I'm a horrible husband. She had actually made it while trying a new recipe back on Wednesday, and had just thrown it in the freezer. Instead of making another cake (or having me make it, which would have ended up being even more work for Heather), she just pulled the un-tested cake from the freezer and made some frosting for it.
It was a "Chili Cacao Mayan Cake" which recipe she found while bolg-surfing. It contained cayenne pepper and paprika and was spicy enough that it would make you cough if it touched that spot in your throat that seems to get tickled by spicy foods. It went perfectly with dark chocolate icing, vanilla ice cream, and cinnamon-whipped cream. The flavour was like Mexican Hot Chocolate (our favorite) and it is definitely the cake I a going to be asking for when it is my birthday!

The beautiful weather has meant that we've been spending a lot of time at the river. Even Deacon loved having his little feet in the mud.

The three older kids are all playing soccer again this summer and that has kept us pretty busy. So busy in fact that we have to split up and take Ella and the boys to separate fields because their practices are at the same time but at different places. Because of that, I still haven't gotten any pictures of Ella, but here are some action shots that Mason posed for me while we were watching Tyson play.

And this is about as "action" as Tyson gets. It is cute though to watch him and his teammates swarming around the ball.

Sorry it was so quick today, but I've been getting harassing phone messages from Tanis and just had to post something.

Hey nice cake.....it sounds very interesting.....a hot spicy cake, hum???? That would be fun to try, but I'm afraid you would have to make it Heather! maybe next time at Jewels you guys could bring cake???? and maybe we would be there???? anyways happy birthday Heather. Hey it looks like you guys are in a new house. I think I knew you moved but congrats on the house anyways.
Yum. It looks awesome! We'd love to try it too!!! You look awesome Heather. I love your little side kick, I think any time I see Deacon, he's sitting in his perfect place, on mama's hip! So cute! Way to go with soccer you guys! Tyson looks adorable in his big uniform!
And Chad, for Heather's sake, I think it will always be safer that she just make her own cake. I mean honestly, why would you torture her...on her own birthday!
See how easy that was? Now I will leave you alone.
Maybe.
Heather HAPPY BIRTHDAY! You look too young to be as old as you are;)
Love ya!
I agree with Tanis on how easy it is! You have been slipping done Tanis' blog line. I was starting to give up hope! Please don't tell Ryan, he loves HOT and I do not! Good job Heather!
Johy,
If you can convince Jewel to invite us to her place sometime we could absolutely meet you guys there. And we will bring the cake.
Thanks Jewel and Tan for the birthday wishes, your comments made Heather feel good.
Twyla, I am working on another post right now just to get us back up that list...
I like to visit this particular post from time to time just to admire the cake and wish I had some right now! I finally realized that the little green and red candies on top are in the shape and colors of a pepper. I just feel so proud of myself that I finally figured it out but am, at the same time, disappointed that it took me several visits to get it.
Also, after feeling so triumphant and satisfied with my discovery I am aware that I could be totally wrong and am completely ready to suffer any ridicule and/or embarrassment due me if that is the case.
Lorin you are totally right. I don't know if everyone else got it or not, but I had the advantage of Heather telling me that it was a chili pepper.
I think it looks a bit like the "hero's sword" from an 8-bit Zelda game.
