Happy Birthday Heather

Heather's birthday was on the 16th and her parents, sister, and nieces came up to celebrate with us.  Unbeknownst to Heather, my sisters and their families also drove for two hours to spend the day with her.  To keep her from being suspicious of how much food we were preparing, I told her that I had invited some people from work.  Heather is so awesome, she didn't even mind that I had supposedly invited people that she hadn't even met, to HER party.

When my sisters and their families arrived, Heather opened the door and found them singing happy birthday.  We were both touched that we have a family that would drop everything to come and make her feel so loved.

Tanis did a pretty good job on her post, but there were a couple of corrections that needed to be made.  First of all, I made all of the meat for the meal - I started the brisket and pork butt at 8:30AM the day before to ensure that there was enough time for it to be rubbed, smoked, crutched, and rested for the 4:00PM party.  I even made the potato bombs, bbq'd the hotdogs, and mixed the lime cordial.

Sure, Heather still made baked beans, coleslaw, and cornbread muffins from scratch; That is a lot to do for your own birthday, but compared to how much she normally does, and how little I usually contribute to supper... this was kind of a big deal.

The other thing that needed to be addressed in Tanis' post was the hatchet job she did of reporting on our 1975 Plymouth Fury.  This car is an absolute gem that came to our family under near-miraculous circumstances and brings nothing but happiness and fond memories to everyone who rides in it or sees it cruising around Bayport.  It is 4360lbs of sunshine.  A time machine.  Going for a ride in The Fury is one of our family's favorite activities.  The reason that people don't go for Sunday drives in the country anymore isn't because of our fast-paced hectic lifestyles.  It is because of our soulless modern automobiles.

If I recall correctly, the only time that any of us stopped smiling was when I got out to take a picture of Ava behind the wheel and Jewel slipped the car into drive, leaving me to chase after it in the parking lot, begging for them to stop.  Of course, the seven other occupants all thought it was hilarious.

It was so nice for the cousins to get together.  They are the best kids I know and I really admire their parents for doing such a great job with them.

Speaking of admiration, I am such a lucky guy to be married to Heather.  I don't believe in soul-mates; in fact, I believe that the expectation of soul-mates is why so many marriages fail.  I believe that any husband and wife can have a successful marriage as long as they are committed to working hard and overcoming trials together.  Yet somehow despite this, I have been blessed with a perfect match, my own soul-mate whom I found through fully-miraculous circumstances.  I thought she was perfect when I met her, but as each birthday has come and gone, she has only gotten more charming, more sweet, more pretty, and more of a good example of how I should act.  Happy birthday sweetheart.
